What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by repeated breathing events, such as pauses or interruptions in breathing. During these episodes, blood oxygen levels often drop, followed by a brief awakening (usually unconscious) of the patient. Normal breathing then resumes until the next episode.

This condition can have significant consequences, ranging from mild to severe, including excessive daytime sleepiness, mood changes, headaches, and more. Appropriate treatment can help restore both physical and mental well-being.

Risk Factors

According to the Quebec Lung Association, sleep apnea is as common as asthma, diabetes, and high blood pressure. They also estimate that 80% of people affected by it have not yet been diagnosed. It is therefore important to seek a diagnosis if you have any concerns.

While no one is completely immune, certain factors can increase the risk of developing OSA :

  • Sex : men are at higher risk

  • Excess weight and obesity

  • Facial and neck structure : wide neck, recessed or weak chin, narrow face

  • Age : 40 and older

  • Family history

  • Smoking

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness

  • Fatigue and low energy

  • Headaches

  • Difficulty concentrating and memory loss

  • Irritability and mood changes

  • Decreased libido and sexual dysfunction

  • Frequent nighttime awakenings

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can sleep apnea be dangerous?

Breathing pauses and interruptions can occur dozens of times per night and last several seconds. Each episode deprives the body of oxygen, putting extra strain on the heart. The heart must compensate by beating faster, which can lead to high blood pressure. The increased fatigue caused by sleep apnea can also contribute to depression, sometimes severe.

Are nighttime sleep apnea devices comfortable to wear?

Many of our patients report going through an adjustment period to sleep comfortably with their device. Some discomfort may occur at first, but it typically disappears after a few weeks.

I’m extremely tired but don’t snore. Could sleep apnea be the cause?

Yes, some patients with sleep apnea do not snore. Other factors can contribute to the development of this sleep disorder.

A diagnostic test will allow our professionals to determine whether or not sleep apnea is the cause.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. Since these are medical tests, a prescription from a physician is required to perform diagnostic testing. The respiratory therapist conducting the tests will send your results and follow up directly with your doctor.

What Is the difference between a BiPAP and a CPAP?

CPAP stands for "Continuous Positive Airway Pressure," and BiPAP stands for "Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure."

These abbreviations refer to assisted breathing devices used to treat certain sleep disorders, specifically obstructive sleep apnea.

The choice of device depends on the analysis of your breathing during sleep. Our team of respiratory therapists will recommend the device best suited to your needs.

What Is the cost of consultations and sleep apnea devices?

You can quickly obtain a complimentary consultation with a professional who will guide you through the various steps of sleep apnea diagnosis.

The diagnostic test costs $350 (fully credited toward the purchase of a CPAP or BiPAP at Équilibre) and includes :

  • An in-person meeting with a respiratory therapist who will explain in detail how the Level 3 diagnostic test works.

  • Loan of the equipment necessary to perform a full night’s home test.

  • Collection and analysis of the data recorded during the test.

  • Review of the data by a pulmonologist, who will then provide a diagnosis.

  • A detailed report for you and your doctor.

  • A follow-up phone appointment with the respiratory therapist to thoroughly review your results.

Your test results will directly influence the treatment and, consequently, the cost of your sleep apnea device. To know the exact price, you must meet with one of our respiratory therapists, who will assess your needs and recommend the most suitable device.

Most private insurance plans cover the cost of a CPAP device every five years and annually cover the cost of a mask, tubing, filter pack, and humidifier reservoir.

Alternatively, you can claim the costs on your tax return under medical expenses. Please note that there is no tax, as the product is prescription-only.

What warranties are offered on sleep apnea devices?

We offer a comfort guarantee for your mask. If you experience any discomfort, we can exchange your mask for a new one within the first 30 days after purchase.

You also benefit from a warranty on accessories (tubing, masks, and humidifier reservoirs) for 90 days after purchase. Additionally, there is a warranty in case of internal device damage. Full details can be found on your invoice.
